FRENCH STONES
These sculptures were made during the months I spent as artist-in-residence at the Centre d'Art in Marnay-sur-Seine, France. I gathered hundreds of stones from along the banks of the Seine which is, at Marnay, green and lazy as it flows toward Paris. I hauled the rocks back to my studio in an ancient priory where, by adding some smaller stones and touches of paint, I transformed them into heads. The Centre d'Art held an exhibition of the work in 2003 and in 2004 the sculptures were exhibited at Victoria Munroe Fine Art in Boston. French Stones, an illustrated catalogue with an essay about the experience, was published in connection with the Boston exhibition and is available from the artist.
